CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness-based Therapies - MindWell NYC

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebecca Skolnick, co-founder of MindWell NYC, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MindWell NYC is a private group practice of compassionate and skilled clinicians. We provide individual, group, family, and couples therapy to people of all ages. We work with people struggling with a range of issues such as life transitions, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationships, emotional ups and downs, and trauma. We specialize in cognitive, dialectical, and mindfulness-based behavior therapies and teach our clients practical tools for leading a more fulfilled life.

Tell us about yourself

I am one of three co-founders of our private practice. We came together to open MindWell NYC in order to provide evidence-based therapy in an inclusive, friendly, and warm environment. We truly value our community of clinicians, administrators, and clients. I love the ability to regularly consult with my team, help people, learn, and grow. Providing therapy is both a science and an art, which requires a great deal of training and creativity as well as thinking on my feet. I love that every day is interesting and different, and it truly feels like a privilege to be let into people's lives in a meaningful way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a continuous challenge for the business in many ways. I believe that the way we navigated and continue to work with the ever-change climate is a big accomplishment. When COVID hit, we were able to quickly transition to online telehealth services so we could continue to provide care to our clients. As the pandemic has evolved, we have transitioned back to in-person and online services. We recently moved into a larger office space, which allows us to hire more clinicians and socially distance when needed.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, you can never fully turn off. There is always something going on, people to manage, and new issues to deal with. Fortunately, having partners really help us each be able to take time off when we need it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Talk to other business owners inside and outside of your industry, consider the pros/cons of having a partner, and identify your strengths and areas where you can use help/outsource.
