Develop a Healthier YOU - MindFit Counseling
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Cannon, Owner of MindFit Counseling LLC., located in Westfield, IN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is in mental health and wellness. Our customers are a variety of individuals ranging from mild struggles with anxiety and depression to complex/severe trauma. We also see veterans and first responders as well! We specialize in brain-body-based modalities that bring body sensations and awareness into the therapy room. These modalities include Brainspotting, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems or "Parts Work."
Tell us about yourself
I am a relational person. I love to build relationships, and I love being the best at what I do. I've always wanted to own a business where I can motivate others to learn and grow and build lasting relationships with both clinicians and clients. People motivate me to do what I do. Seeing the successes of our clients and our clinicians makes me happy that I get to share in some of that joy and excitement. When a therapist is trained in a new modality, and they help a client move further along in their therapeutic journey than they originally ever thought was possible - this motivates me. The excitement, the passion, the purpose - I'm here for that.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I view my biggest accomplishment as a measure of how happy my therapists are in their current position. When people begin working here, they don't leave. Creating a collaborative and close team environment that people want to be a part of is something I cherish. When new clinicians get a taste of it, they want to stay. Everyone gets along, helps, and motivates each other. Creating an environment like that is a purpose-driven effort.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As we grow bigger, it's harder to give each one of my therapists my individual attention. The bigger we grow - the more I have to stretch across domains. Being the one that makes decisions and executes them is never easy. Delegating tasks to others and trusting that their passion for it is similar to yours.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Prepare before you make any moves! Research similar business owners' mistakes and learn from them!
- Trust your gut when hiring people for your team. Slow to hire, quick to fire. A bad seed can ruin the whole crop.
- Don't grow too quickly; spoil what you have with attention so that when you grow, you have strength in your numbers.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
We LOVE training interns at our site. We have high expectations for them by asking them to be trained in Brainspotting prior to attending to clients. This gives them the confidence and skills they need to effectively treat a number of things, but most importantly, trauma.
Our interns offer low-cost counseling, but due to our high expectations for their training and purpose-driven supervision, they are more competent than many clinicians. This ensures that the care clients receive doesn't suffer due to lack of insurance or affordability. Because of this, many of our interns have chosen to take a permanent position with our company post-graduation - and we couldn't be more proud of them :)
