Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Erica Miller, founder and owner of Mind Your Business, located in Covington, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help business owners realize their full potential by creating systems and processes to help run their businesses in an efficient and profitable way. My customers are creative and passionate about their craft; however, they struggle with the “business” of owning a business. I work with them to resolve the issues and setbacks that are keeping them from reaching their full potential. I’m committed to innovation and education and always providing the most efficient plan of action to achieve their goals.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in retail, marketing, banking, and finance. I’ve worked the last 20 years to diversify my skill set and now have the expertise to assist business owners in a wide variety of areas.

Entrepreneurship has been a passion of mine since I was young, and starting my own business was always my priority. My position as a finance manager gave me the opportunity to work directly with the business owners, which motivated me to start Mind Your Business.

I get so much joy from helping others achieve their goals.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest success has been the creation of my product line. My workbook and planner were a true labor of love that took almost a year to develop, create and produce. I learned so much during that process alone!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is getting past your self-doubt and fears. Many business owners that I have met (myself included) have suffered from imposter syndrome and feelings of self-doubt. These feelings are dangerous and can prevent you from success before you ever get the opportunity to try. I’m also passionate about inspiring business owners to overcome these feelings.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Trust yourself- always trust that you have what it takes to get the job done.
  2. Have a plan- create a specific plan with checkpoints along the way to your ultimate goal. It will help keep you motivated.
  3. Fear the Yes more than the No- don’t be afraid of failure. Growth comes from failure, and the biggest task is to deliver once the opportunity comes. As long as you have the plan in place, you will be ready.
