Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Milinda Martin, founder of Milinda Martin Coaching, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an executive coach working primarily with small business owners and nonprofit leaders. We develop strategies to enhance their organizations, strengthen their resources, and better manage their teams and boards. I've been fortunate to have received a lot of leadership training. Sadly, most business owners/nonprofit leaders have not been so lucky. There are so many tips and practices that can streamline efforts and create greater success, and my hope is to share what I've learned so others can benefit.

Tell us about yourself

After decades in leadership for Fortune 500 companies, primarily in communications, ESG, and marketing, I was ready to use my leadership skills to help others, especially those who don't have the resources or experiences that large corporations can provide. My clients motivate me every day with their tenacity and dedication. Many are truly working to improve their communities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My greatest joys come from seeing new leaders succeed. When someone first steps up to lead an organization or start their own business, they need a sounding board, a guide, and someone to help them create a strategy for success. Running your own business/nonprofit can be a lonely position, so my hope is to be the required support system that enables the new leader to feel competent, focused, and endorsed.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

With my clients, I see two areas where they often struggle. One is getting the right team in place to ensure the leader can focus on big-picture items. The other is finding time for yourself and finding the balance between work and the rest of one's life. We typically spend a lot of time talking about how a leader's time is allocated.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My first tip would be to realize you cannot do this alone. We all need a team to help us succeed, whether paid or not. Building your support network is key to succeeding, and getting the right team in place is invaluable.

The second tip would be to create a strategy for growth so that you aren't trying to do everything all at once. I call this my "year 1, year 2, year 3" plan.

Lastly, recognize that your time is your most valuable asset. Spend it wisely.
