Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mikye Campbell, Owner of Life After Stress Massage Therapy LLC., located in Columbus, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I’m in the business of massage therapy, and my clients come from all walks of life, from athletes to stay at my moms and office workers to chefs—just active people in general.
Tell us about yourself
I am a licensed massage therapist. I am certified in oncology massage, prenatal massage, neuromuscular therapy, Hot Stone Therapy, Cupping massage, and personal training. What made me want to start working on my own business was that there were certain things I could not do when working for a franchise spa, which made it harder to get the trust of new clients and show that I am capable of doing what I do best. The fact that I love what I do motivates me every day, but I felt limited in the therapy I could provide for my clients. And I got tired of working for other people.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To be honest, my biggest accomplishment was actually starting the business. The unknown is the scariest part about opening a business; it’s like walking off a cliff and not knowing if you will fall or fly.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest part about starting my business was gaining new clients. When I left the franchise I was working for, I couldn’t take any clients with me, which made it harder to get the trust of new clients and show that I could do what I do best.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have patience. There’ll be days you feel like you’re not going to make it in that business or that field but keep going.
- Start advertising your business at least 3 to 4 months before you open; that way, people will get interested, and when you open, they’ll come to see what you’re about.
- Save some money for days when things don’t go the way you plan.
