Simplify Your Social Media - Miel Design Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rebekah Miel, Founder of Miel Design Studio, located in Durham, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Miel Design Studio is an award-winning design, marketing, and communications agency that works with B Corps, non-profits, and other purpose-driven organizations. We specialize in companies that are helping to solve the most pressing climate issues facing our planet.

Tell us about yourself

I've been running the studio for 18 years, but 10 years ago, when I was pregnant with twins, I was written out of the org chart of the company where I was working without explanation. I resigned so that I could commit to building my agency before I had newborn twins and never looked back. I'm so grateful for the work we get to do every single day - making beautiful sense out of a complex world - but I'm almost motivated by my team. We're trying to build a different kind of agency where work/life balance can actually exist, and employees come before profits.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We've raised over 1 million dollars for non-profits, movement work, and disaster relief efforts in our community and abroad, including raising almost $75,000 to pay down the school lunch debt in our hometown.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As we continue to grow, it's becoming more difficult to balance the realities of running a sustainable business with the needs of my team. It's not impossible, but something that I work on improving every single day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Fail fast. You learn more from your mistakes than you do from getting them right the first time. But don't wallow in that failure. Be accountable but move on as quickly as you can.
  2. "Comparison is the thief of joy" is one of the truest sayings. It might seem like others are more successful or reaching goals faster than you, but you don't know the whole story. Stay focused on your own goals, not others.
  3. Do less. Entrepreneurs are naturally high achievers. This can easily mean burnout. Remembering to consistently do one less thing or say no to something that doesn't feel like the right fit means we can save our energy for the work that really matters.
