Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Fox, Culinary Nutritionist, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi there! I am Michelle Fox, Culinary Nutritionist, and I help busy professionals get more nutrition in their bodies and have more fun in their home kitchens. A lack of time to prepare healthy meals is the biggest problem we hear from our clients. MFCN exists to support the health of individuals as they build lives they love. We teach simple, nutritious, and delicious food preparation that actually saves time in the long run. Too many people put business and other obligations ahead of their health. We believe you can have both: a healthy body and your business dreams.

Tell us about yourself

My Dad died entirely too young from preventable diseases. As a Black male entrepreneur, he carried enormous stress on his shoulders and ate a lot of fast food to compensate for his lack of time. This ultimately led to his early demise. My programs teach my community how to create simple, quick meals to fuel their bodies and support their business dreams. I give back to my community through 1:1 nutrition coaching, group coaching programs, and corporate workshops. I know we can create a healthier world one person at a time. Community is my first company value, and fun is #2.

The opportunities in my business are exponential. As I build my team, I am employing talent and contributing to our economy. As I teach individuals, we are building healthier communities. As the business grows, I am able to support my family.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Landing an annual contract with AARP has been rewarding. The organization promotes healthy aging, and our partnership has been amazing. I teach culinary nutrition workshops to their community and am able to help others find answers to some of their health questions.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Our current challenge is resources. The company does not have the funding to pay full-time support staff at this time. We (my Implementer, Virtual Assistant, and myself) have an abundance of ideas but lack time to see all of them through. It is a dream to hire a full-time Marketing Specialist and Implementer to execute some of our ideas.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now - even if it is messy. I've learned more by "doing" than by "researching" in my biz.
  2. Give yourself grace. Running a business can be challenging but so worth it. You will make mistakes, and that is OK!
  3. Ask for help! There is a good chance that someone you know has a solution to your question. Most solopreneurs I know are more than willing to help.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business can feel like a grind. It is OK to take breaks (naps and/or vacations)!
