Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle E. Dickinson, Founder of Trifecta Mental Health, located in Westfield, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The world has changed since the pandemic. People who never experienced a mental health imbalance are now experiencing one. Yet, most have ignored their emotional well-being or diminished it because they think we have all had to deal with loss and challenges during the pandemic. I help people reclaim their emotional well-being and build resilience. I empower people to implement small micro changes into their routines to restore their emotional well-being and reclaim their sense of peace and joy. This work is deeply personal because I struggled with depression and witnessed my own mother struggle with depression throughout my life. I am committed to helping people not suffer or be embarrassed about their feelings.

Tell us about yourself

After a 19- year career in the pharmaceutical industry, I found myself on the big red dot of the TED stage, telling the story of loving and caring for my bipolar mother. The reaction I received from the audience made me realize the power that storytelling has in transforming stigma. From there, I wrote my memoir Breaking Into My Life – Growing Up with My Bipolar Parent and My Battle to Reclaim Myself. What motivates me is knowing that far too many people are suffering in silence out of fear or shame and not getting the support they need. My goal is to normalize the narrative around brain health and empower people to take control of how they feel before they hit a crisis.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have reached thousands of people throughout the pandemic with my Resilience work in a myriad of industries. I have helped people during the darkest moments of quarantine feel better and become more empowered and grounded with my strategies.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, it is business development. Many corporate clients feel they are doing enough with benefits and Employee Assistant Programs. They don’t recognize the fear and shame that prevents their employees from leveraging these resources. Having them understand that has been one of my biggest challenges. Their people ARE struggling.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get your mindset straight. Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.
  2. Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs, not corporate peers. There is a completely different perspective from both.
  3. Give yourself grace and freedom. Don’t be afraid to pivot.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You can’t do anything without self-love. If you don’t love yourself, it will impact ALL areas of your life, including your business. You must work to fall in love with yourself to become connected to what you are worthy of.
