Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelina Kraus, Owner of Fountain of Youth Acupuncture, located in Fort Mill, SC, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a licensed acupuncturist, a certified personal trainer, and a certified microneedling specialist. My patients range from those in their golden years to professional athletes and everything in between.
Tell us about yourself
My first experience with acupuncture was at age 13, in the back bedroom of my grandparent's home. An acupuncturist was treating my mother for symptoms related to cancer. I remember being very interested in what was happening and the acupuncturist asking if I wanted to help. She then showed me how to feel for the energy and remove blocked or stuck chi. Little did I know that experience would change my life forever and set me on a path to becoming an acupuncturist.
While studying for my degree and treating at my school's clinic, I quickly became skilled at treating pain and chronic illness. At the same time, I had a deep interest in and considered specializing in cosmetic acupuncture and holistic skin care.
Upon graduating, I began working at a prestigious multidisciplinary wellness center, where my skills in alleviating pain became even more significant. I had the pleasure of treating world-class athletes and professionals in the NFL, MMA, and baseball. I spent five great years serving as Director of Acupuncture and further honing my craft.
In 2020, my husband and I were pursuing greater balance in our lives and decided to move to Fort Mill, South Carolina. This move paved the way for me to open my private practice, where I could provide the highest level of one-on-one care to my patients. It also allowed me to highlight my precision and attention to detail, focusing on cosmetic acupuncture and holistic skin care, specifically micro-needling. As an acupuncturist and someone who values an organic lifestyle, I am excited to be able to provide toxin- and harsh chemical-free treatments for those seeking beauty naturally!
I was raised to think outside the box when it comes to healthcare. Having firsthand experience with an acupuncturist when I was young provided me with interest in the practice. I finished my bachelor's and went to graduate school to become an acupuncturist. In the summer of 2020, I moved from North Jersey to South Carolina with my husband. My plan was to open an acupuncture practice, incorporating skin care as a highlight of what I already did with acupuncture.
Prior to our move, I worked at a multidisciplinary clinic, treating a higher volume of patients. In the five years I worked there, I learned a tremendous amount and perfected my skills. When I moved to South Carolina, I wanted to not only help people feel better but also improve how they felt about themselves on the outside. With that being said, I became certified in micro-needling, utilizing Chinese herbal serums and LED light therapy. I always take before and after photos, and when I lay them side by side, it is so satisfying to see the proof of improvement.
When I see how much I was able to help someone regain their confidence, I feel like I did my job. When it comes to acupuncture, getting results is very similar to getting them with micro-needling. When patients feel better, and I can get them on a maintenance schedule, which is my goal for every patient, I know I have done them a service and my job.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Just that. Running my practice and showing myself I could do it—I just had to take the chance. I knew failing was 100% possible, but if I never tried, I would always kick myself for not attempting it. My whole life, I have wanted to have control over my career, and now I do!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I am learning everything for the first time: how to build a website, billing, scheduling, marketing, accounting, etc. It's hard when you make mistakes, but you learn to believe in yourself and continue to push forward.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Really reflect on why you want to own your own business. Is it because you want to be able to say you're a business owner in front of your peers, or because that's what you truly want.
- Write down what you want to accomplish as a business owner, and find a mentor who has already done it.
- Have as much fun as possible, even on tough days.
