Chronic Tacos - Michael Mohammed
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Mohammed, CEO of Chronic Tacos, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Chronic Tacos is a California-inspired Taco Shop that celebrates authenticity and individuality. Our first taco Shop opened on July 4, 2002, in Newport Beach, California, and we have grown to over 40 locations operating across the United States, Canada, and Japan. This year marks our 20-year anniversary, and we have been on tour celebrating Taco Life. Our customers have become hooked on our unparalleled flavor, elevated vibe, and irresistible edge.
Tell us about yourself
I am originally from Vancouver, Canada. After working as a financial Analyst for Boeing in Seattle, Washington, I moved back to Vancouver, where I partnered with my brothers on several ventures. I was introduced to Chronic Tacos in 2010 when we financed their first location in Canada and saw something special in the brand. By 2012 my brothers and I felt there was an opportunity to acquire the majority of the company and grow the brand. I moved to California and haven’t looked back. I love the people I work with and the energy they bring to the brand. It is such a great culture we have, and it is always motivating to work on a brand you believe in.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe our biggest accomplishment is taking a unique brand with great food and turning it into a successful business model. While our growth is something we are proud of, it is the culture we have that makes it special. Our goal is always to provide a great experience for our customers, it takes hard work, but it is also about having fun.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
It is the sense of responsibility you have for all the stakeholders that come with the job. You don’t have a business without the people that make it run, from customers and franchisees to the people you work with. I take it to heart and am driven to lead our team through any challenges we have. But I also get to enjoy the successes with them.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Love what you do. If you don’t love it, you won’t stay motivated through the ups and downs.
- Surround yourself with good people and empower them to do what they do best.
- Be agile. You never know what will be thrown your way. Don’t be afraid to admit a mistake and move forward.
