Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michael Hyland, owner of Physical Therapy and Wellness, LLC, located in Broken Arrow, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At Hyland Physical Therapy and Wellness, we specialize in helping persons with PD who are 65 and older to remain active, independent, and mobile in order to empower them for life, family, and fun.

We offer a whole-person perspective of treatment through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology to offer a pathway of success for the Persons with Parkinson's that we serve.

In addition, we address fall prevention and wellness for aging adults who are over 65 in order for them to live their best life. We also offer education for Parkinson's Disease through YouTube, podcasting, and via our membership site Parkinson's Disease Education.

Tell us about yourself

I became interested in Parkinson's Disease treatment while still in my doctoral program at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. I was so inspired by the dedication to improvement and doing what it takes that person with PD to have, and I wanted to be a part of helping them to reach those goals. Each day I look forward to going to work because of my passion for educating clients and seeing the look of understanding in their eyes when they finally make connections between problems they have been wondering about and the disease that they live with. Education for persons with PD is severely lacking in the medical world, even in the USA, and it feels amazing to be a part of making a positive change in the right direction. I also love making my patients smile and feel encouraged by the progress that they sometimes have problems recognizing in themselves.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say my biggest accomplishment has been creating strong relationships in my community and in building a team of like-minded and passionate professionals that put the patient before their own self-interests.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I'd say the hardest thing for me has been leadership and having tough conversations. I am a natural people pleaser, so I have had to become more comfortable being uncomfortable with certain situations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Invest in yourself and in coaching as early as possible! This is invaluable, and if you choose not to listen to this, I guarantee that you will fund yourself floundering without specific guidance and without a community.
  2. Find your niche and OWN it. You have gifts that nobody else has. Find those gifts, lean into them, embrace them, and use them to help a specific group of people to solve very specific problems. You will attract more people overall even though you are hyper-focused on one area. I promise this works.
  3. Build lasting, authentic, quality relationships in your community. This builds word of mouth and credibility. You will need this for referrals and for increasing your "famousity." That term was invented by one of my coaches, Mr. David Bayliff, PT with Uncaged Clinician.
