Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rosangel Perez, Founder of Miami House of Creative Arts LLC., located in Miami, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Miami House of Creative Arts (Miami HofCA) was founded with the intent to create a musical education that feels the way home should feel: caring and supportive. We offer music lessons and music therapy services to clients of all ages and abilities. Our priority is to provide high-quality instruction and equip students with the necessary tools to succeed while also instilling a love for music that overcomes the boundaries we set on one another and ourselves as human beings. We believe in our students and want them to not only grow professionally but also learn to believe in themselves.

Tell us about yourself

My desire to have a music school can be traced all the way back to my childhood. Born in Cuba, I started my music career at the age of 5. I have been a pianist ever since. Along the way, I realized I also loved teaching and creating new things. My mind is constantly flowing with ideas, and having a music school provides an outlet for my creative self.

Being self-aware of this, I designed an educational background that would prepare me. I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance, a Master’s degree in Music Education, and a Master’s in Business Administration.

What motivates me to do what I do is the fact that I was so fortunate to have music throughout my whole life. Knowing how to play an instrument from an early age has been crucial in my development, not just as a musician but also as a human being. I want others to have this gift too. Through life’s adversities, music anchored me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Putting together a group of professionals that are not only experts at what they do but also kind and caring human beings is one of my priorities and biggest accomplishments as a business owner. It’s easy to look at a resume and determine whether a person is professionally qualified or not, but it makes a difference when you take the time to hand-pick individuals who also genuinely care for what they do and for the clients they serve. I think this makes all the difference, and I am proud of the team I have put together.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Maintaining a high level of involvement as the number of clients increases. I like to be very involved and stay in close communication with the clients and team of professionals! This becomes increasingly difficult when there are only so many hours in a day to do everything one needs to do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a business that speaks to you and who you are. Being passionate about it will motivate you to make it succeed.
  2. Be mindful of who you select to work with you. If you want to establish a long-term business, you want trustworthy people to be around long-term!
  3. Be patient. It takes time to build a business. Don’t compare yourself to others! We often see the final product and not so much of the struggle and work behind every successful business.
