Candles That Smell Like Home - Mi Soy Candle
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kimberly Gonzalez, Owner of Mi Soy Candle, located in Hermiston, OR, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Mi Soy Candle is a natural soy candle business, but with a twist, they will be the cheesiest Latinx candles you will ever find. Nuestras velitas are made with wooden wick, so you can hear them crackle as they burn. Our scents are inspired by my cultura. Take a piece of home wherever you go.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Latina born in Los Angeles but moved to Oregon due to financial circumstances my familia was going through. I started my candle business during COVID. I remember whining my partner that I couldn't find velitas that reminded me of home, much less represent our cultura. He quickly stated, "Do something about it then." It caught me off guard, but I like challenges, so I said, "Bring it on!" From there, I started researching, and once I was ready, I purchased my first order of supplies the rest was history.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing mi gente love these velitas. It brings joy to my heart and motivates me every time I hear customers say, "Wow, great job. These are amazing!" I do it for the Latinx community, hoping every time they light the velitas up, it reminds them of home.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner is seeking help. The company is our baby sometimes; we do not want anyone to help. However, with help, we can focus on other aspects of the business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Three tips I would give anyone looking to run a business would be not to give up. There will be many fails at first, pero no te rajes, you got this! In addition, let the brand reflect who you are and your values. Lastly, help others out. If someone is starting and asks for guidance, be there for them, and let us help pave the way for others.
