Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sonya Mehta, Founder of Metamorphosis Path, located in Oakland, CA , USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, Metamorphosis Path (www.metamorphosispath.com), is centered around coaching visionary changemakers to build the businesses of their dreams while prioritizing their own wellbeing and sustainability. I offer guidance and support to individuals who seek to break free from the conventional work structure and step into entrepreneurship as their own bosses. My clients include a diverse range of individuals, such as healers, artists, educators, nonprofit leaders, activists, and more. These passionate individuals are driven by their desire to make a positive impact on the world and are looking for a way to align their values with their work. Through personalized coaching sessions, I help them navigate the complexities of starting and growing a business, enabling them to thrive both personally and professionally.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a coach dedicated to assisting visionary leaders who are deeply committed to the values of healing and justice. My journey began when I worked as a teacher in a public school in East Oakland. While the work was meaningful and gratifying, it came at an immense personal cost, leading to long days of overworking, exhaustion, bad eating habits, and ultimately burnout, which led to me leaving the classroom. I vividly recall the cycle of 14-hour days fueled by caffeine and adrenaline. The work was important, but because I wasn't taking care of myself, I couldn't sustain it, which ultimately didn't serve the community either.

This experience ignited my passion for supporting other heart-centered leaders who, like me, risk burning themselves out while pursuing work that is impactful and purposeful. Each day, my motivation stems from the desire to make a positive difference in the lives of these changemakers, guiding them on a path towards success and fulfillment without sacrificing their wellbeing. I deeply believe that when we are nourished and healthy, our capacity for impact actually expands, and this is the mission I dedicate myself to every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been co-founding The Embrace Impact Incubator (www.holisticunderground.org/embrace) — a transformative community of practice dedicated to advancing projects centered around healing, justice, equity, and belonging. In our incubator, we offer comprehensive business development coaching, mastermind programming, fiscal sponsorship, and a supportive community of practice. Recently, we successfully completed our first incubator cohort, comprising 17 remarkable changemakers who have honed their business skills and expanded their community of aligned leaders. I'm committed to nurturing the next generation of impactful projects, both through my one-on-one coaching offering and through expanding the reach and accessibility of this incubator to serve many more social entrepreneurs.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a solopreneur leadership coach, one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is the need to wear multiple hats and manage various aspects of the business single-handedly. As the sole leader and practitioner of my coaching business, I not only focus on providing high-quality coaching services to my clients, but I also have to handle marketing, sales, administrative tasks, finance, and more. Balancing these diverse responsibilities can be challenging and time-consuming, leaving less time for what I'm truly passionate about—coaching and helping my clients grow.

While being a solopreneur is an incredibly empowering and exciting journey, it also requires resilience, self-motivation, and the ability to seek external support and resources to overcome the hurdles that come with running a one-person business. I'm very lucky to have a great community of fellow solopreneurs who I can lean on for support and who I can support in return.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get Clear on Your Unique Zone of Genius ::: Identify your strengths, passions, and skills that set you apart from others. Understanding your unique zone of genius will enable you to focus on what you do best and find your niche in the market. Embrace your expertise and align it with the needs of your target audience. This clarity will not only guide your business offerings but also boost your confidence and passion for what you do.
  2. Put Rituals in Place to Structure Your Time ::: Building a business requires discipline and effective time management. Establish daily rituals that create the right amount of structure and flow in your workdays, depending on how you work best. One of my favorite rituals is using a journal template to plan my week on Monday mornings and a different template to reflect on the week on Friday afternoons. Set time aside for client work "in" your business and also time to work "on" your business in areas like strategy, modeling your finances, marketing, content creation, and nurturing your audience. Monitor your energy level throughout the day and week, and use your wide-open schedule to your advantage: choose the time of the day that you're most focused and clear-minded for "heads-down" strategic and creative work (for me, this is the mornings). Choose a different block for client calls and meetings, and make sure to build in time to cook and eat lunch, exercise, and care for yourself throughout the day.
  3. Work with a Coach to Get Launched ::: Partnering with a business coach can be immensely valuable, especially when starting out. A coach can provide guidance, accountability, and support throughout your entrepreneurial journey. They can help you refine your business idea, develop a solid business plan, and navigate the challenges that arise. Furthermore, a coach can assist with the inner work required to be a successful business owner, such as building resilience, managing self-doubt, and fostering a growth mindset. Their expertise and perspective can accelerate your progress and help you overcome obstacles on your path to success. If you're looking for a coach to help you launch your business or invest in your own sustainability as a business owner, I can help!
