Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meredith Turney, a conscious leadership coach based in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The way we work and build teams is rapidly changing. Leaders often feel unprepared to navigate the transition. As a conscious leadership coach, consultant and communicator, I help leaders and their teams create new ways of working and relating so they can prepare for the future by consciously co-creating it.

Tell us about yourself

I worked as a communications coach for nonprofit organizations. The conversations would eventually veer into topics such as their career growth or how to deal with a poor manager. I realized that I love helping people reach their full potential and be truly happy in their life and work. So I became a certified professional coach and started coaching, consulting, and communicating about how we can improve the workplace and help people be genuinely happy in their work and life. My passion is helping change the conversation about the role of work in our lives and how to create work environments that help people reach their dreams. I also love writing about the future of work and conscious leadership via my Substack.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Getting my first paid client! I wasn't sure if anyone would pay me for coaching. But when clients realize that coaching helps them reach new levels of success and fulfillment that were once only dreams, they're eager to invest in themselves and the coaching partnership.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balancing the work and administrative responsibilities. As your business grows, you can hire more help. But in the beginning, it's a lot, juggling the actual work with clients and all the administrative tasks necessary to keep the business going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on who you serve and what they want.
  2. Clearly communicate your value and the benefits of your product or service.
  3. Don't be afraid to follow your intuition, ask for help, and take big risks.
