Grow Your Brand - Mendel Sites

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sam Mendelsohn, Owner of Mendel Sites, located in Vaughan, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the owner of Mendel Sites, a web design & development company. I primarily work with service-based businesses looking to grow their business and increase revenue. I understand each client is unique with different needs, and I work with them to build a custom website geared toward getting the specific results they are looking for. My #1 goal is to motivate website visitors to take action and engage with my client's company. I provide everything a client needs for a website to be successful for their business - custom design and development, search engine optimization (SEO), content writing, website training, and ongoing monthly website maintenance services.

Tell us about yourself

I got into building websites for fun during university and then started it as a side hustle while I was working a full-time job at a SaaS company. I realized the only way I'll be a successful entrepreneur is to give it 100%, so I decided to quit my job and run my web design & development business full-time. I'm incredibly lucky to be my own boss and make my own decisions, and I'm motivated every day to be as successful as possible so I can have the freedom to do what I want to do with my life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My proudest accomplishment as a business owner is the 50+ 5-star reviews and testimonials over various platforms I've received online from past clients. Each client I've worked with has had an extremely positive experience working with me, and being able to share positive feedback proves to me that I'm doing something right. I'm proud knowing that as I grow my business, I'm helping all my clients grow their businesses as well and making a real difference for them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner or entrepreneur, especially in the early stage, is the volatility and uncertainty of income. You can go from having the best month you've ever had to earning $0 in revenue the next month. You need to embrace the volatility at the start and just keep going and keep hustling in order to reduce the inconsistencies eventually.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to believe in yourself 100%. If you don't believe in yourself, nobody else is going to, and you're not going to succeed. You can't just try it out and see if it works. You need to commit yourself entirely and outwork everyone else.
  2. Have a way to get recurring monthly revenue. Obviously, every business is different, and this may not be possible for everyone. But recurring monthly revenue is so important to keep your business afloat during the slow months. It's tough to get new sales each month, but if you have a baseline of recurring revenue to pay the bills and any expenses, then it helps to keep you in a much better peace of mind. It is also a great way to be able to scale your business.
  3. Build a referral network as soon as you can. Find people who work with similar clients but aren't direct competition and partner with them. For example, if you are an SEO agency, reach out to web designers and logo designers in your area and set up a referral network with them where if they work with a client who needs SEO, they refer you. And then you do the same for them.
