Warm, Collaborative, and Directive - Mend Orlando

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jenna Watson, Founder of Mend Orlando, located in Orlando, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a mental health counselor who offers support to compassionate and ambitious individuals and organizations who are passionate about improving their lives and their workplace and company culture.

Tell us about yourself

In 2018 I left my career as a marketing executive for my calling as a mental health therapist in private practice. My goal was to blend the art of marketing with the science of clinical psychology to help individuals navigate their pain in a way that makes their journey a little bit more manageable and lighter. Because I already had several years as an entrepreneur under my belt, the leap from owning a digital marketing agency to launching my practice was an easier path than I anticipated. My two "why's," Penelope and Koen (my children), are my source of motivation. A professor once told me I have a "personal audience of two," and that has really stuck with me as I build out my business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On average, it takes a private practice owner two years to build a full caseload. It took me six months.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of owning a business is balancing the time commitment required to scale the company while prioritizing time with those I love and care about most. I am currently adding new lines of business to my organization, and I compare it to trying to pivot a train on a train track. In order to change direction, I need to build the new track first.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The pep rally does not win the football game. Translation: enthusiasm does not accomplish the work.
  2. Start by defining your vision, mission, and goals. From there, create an action plan.
  3. Always know your "why." It will support you in overcoming any "how."
