What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide education and training on how to work with people who have dementia and other memory-impairing diseases. Much of my work is with senior living-based organizations, training their staff and providing the tools they need to be successful. With that said, I also work with families/caregivers to provide them with the techniques and tools they need to be successful caregivers to their loved ones.
Tell us about yourself
I actually started my dementia training journey back in the 1990s. There was little known about how to care for people who had memory-impairing diseases. It was back during one of my first certifications that I realized there had to be a better way to provide care to our elders who suffered memory loss. Throughout the course of my career, I worked both at the local level and corporate levels to improve the services that we provided on a daily basis. During this time, I also was able to work with families in helping them understand the disease process and help them make good decisions on the next steps in their journey.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe there have been a few - but I do believe it is in the joy I experience when I can provide a solution to a problem that either a community-based care setting or a family has had. Secondly, I am proud of the program I have written called "Finding Joy in Their Journey."
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being a business owner is hard - let's just say it. But with that said, there is so much joy in knowing that I am the captain of my own ship and I get to steer in the direction I want to go.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know your audience and understand what the true need base is.
- You need to have lots of stamina - it is not an easy path, but the rewards can be great.
- Plan ahead - prepare yourself. Don't jump in just because it is "vogue," but weigh out your ability to truly stick it out and be successful long term.
