What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the Insurance Exam Queen, and I help people who are studying for and taking the insurance exam so they can become licensed Insurance agents. I made over six figures in 11 months and am currently on track to make the next six figures in 4 months. Many people wanted to know how I built a business that generates $1,000 in sales a day, so I launched a second business and YouTube Channel, Melissa Mae Dillon, to help others do what I did.

Tell us about yourself

I went to college to become a teacher and got the best-paying part-time job I could find, being an Insurance Agent. I was making up to $21/hour back in 2009! When I finished college, I quit insurance and went into teaching. While I loved teaching, I didn't love the school systems, and I missed the money I made in insurance. I went back and forth between the two careers, never happy in just one of them. In 2018 I found the perfect blend of teaching and insurance by entering the Pre-Licensing Education(PLE) space of teaching the insurance exam, and I fell in love. I was working for a corporate company that flew me all around the country to large insurers such as United Health Care to teach classes to their new hires. I was very effective at securing high pass rates and became the most requested instructor for PLE Classes. In 2022, I decided I could take my skills to the masses by launching my own YouTube Channel that taught the Insurance Exam. I also wanted to be more creative than I was able to be at the corporate company I was with. I had no plans other than to make YouTube videos and see what would happen. Knowing that I am helping WAY more people to pass and helping to launch other people's careers is a huge motivator for me, plus I get to do it my way!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I could easily say my biggest accomplishment was making six figures in less than a year, and now $1,000 days, but really, it's the trust and confidence I have in myself that I can do big amazing things. Self-love and a deep trust that my desires get to come true is by far my great accomplishment as a business owner in a world we are told to be "realistic." I never made a business plan, I just flew by the seat of my pants, trusting that it would work, and it did.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with a business owner is your own thoughts that you are crazy to think you can do this and the fear of money not coming in. I made only $220 my first month and a couple thousand each month over the next three months. We have to TRUST that what we want wants us and not allow fear, doubt and worry about pulling us away from the vision we have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Definitely check out my Melissa Mae Dillon YouTube channel, where I share how I made six figures in less than a year.
  2. Go to therapy to work on whatever may be holding you back; so many people have unresolved trauma that keeps them in worry, fear, and doubt mode when you could be stepping into your greatness. I shared the Rapid Transformation Therapy I did on my YouTube Channel that helped me launch my incredibly successful business.
  3. Do not fret over the "how" and simply take the leap; take a step towards your dreams and know that that "how" will come when you're moving in the direction that you want. Also, do not chase the thing that you think will make you money, but go after what you are passionate about and what lights you up. Too many people think they need to make an income before they are allowed to do what they want. I spent a year trying to figure out how to replace my corporate income with no success before finally just leaving to follow my dream, and the money flowed in!
