Navigate Your Pelvic Health - Melanie Struzzi Sutton

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Melanie Struzzi Sutton, Founder of Pelvic Health Mentor, located in Candler, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is pelvic health and wellness consultation, coaching, and concierge physical therapy services, depending on what my clients want and need to help them get to where they want to be. My customers are adult women who have pelvic concerns (discomfort, pain, and/or bladder or bowel control issues), who may not know how to find resources and which ones may be appropriate for them, or who need more education and support around making changes that positively impact their pelvic health and wellness overall.

Tell us about yourself

I love helping people with their pelvic health and function! Bedroom and bathroom issues are my jam, and issues in these private areas can be particularly challenging to deal with. It can be embarrassing and isolating and can impact relationships, work, recreational activities, and emotional well-being. I know this because I have heard it from the many women I have worked with over the past 15 years who have overcome bedroom and bathroom issues and shared how much this has impacted their quality of life. I also know it because I have personal experience with leakage and pain, which led me to this specialization in order to help other women. I started my own business to provide services without the constraints of insurance or corporate limitations and to be able to offer more comprehensive support for my clients. What motivates me is seeing women's lives turn around as they experience the freedom, comfort, and confidence with their pelvic function and are able to return to doing the things they love without being limited by pain or lack of control.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is seeing that I am able to transfer my skills from working for someone else to being my own boss and seeing the success that has followed by being willing to take that risk.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the biggest challenges has been learning the business side of things when my prior experience was primarily clinical and stepping fully into that role.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with support and resources to help you learn from others who have already been there and can help you navigate the questions you will have.
  2. Things don't need to be perfect to start taking action in your business - just start!
  3. It's a learning experience. You will make mistakes, and the important thing is to learn from them and keep moving forward.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Growing a business is a long-haul venture; keep the big picture in mind and continue the mindset of stepping into the role of business owner again and again. Small choices done often over time lead to lasting results.
