Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melanie Emlyn, Founder of Melanie Emlyn Osteopathy, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My purpose is to help people heal their bodies holistically through hands-on osteopathic therapy, holistic nutrition, energy work, and yogic movement. My clients do not settle for a subpar life. They are motivated to make healthy changes and willing to be open and curious about the process of healing, wherever it may take them.

Tell us about yourself

My journey in health and wellness started in my teens, playing high-level sports, dealing with anxiety, and being diagnosed with IBS and scoliosis. I took matters into my own hands and dedicated my life to learning how to be healthier using a more holistic approach. Fifteen years later, I have a successful practice in Calgary doing in-person and virtual treatments that incorporate osteopathy, nutrition, energy work, meditation, and more. My goal in life is to empower others to take control of their health and thrive.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Owning and running my own business successfully and having it thrive in return is my best accomplishment yet. It has been a cumulation of education, business training, and physical labour, and I love to have a full practice with over 500+ clients that I am so grateful to get to help daily. I can't wait to continue to grow and open to see what comes next.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things about being a business owner is creating boundaries for myself and ensuring I get the downtime I need. When you love your job, it's easy to work too much and burn out. I have to be really diligent with limiting social media time, leaving my laptop in the office, and silencing my phone when I am not working. I also find it really important to take time off frequently, whether it's a random Friday or a full week; taking time off allows me to fully reset so that I can show up for my clients, being my best self.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask for help! Building a business is hard work, and it's important to reach out to your community as well as your mentors, for guidance and support. People want to help and support others, so let them!
  2. Self-care is VITAL! As I said above, it's easy to burn the candle at both ends when it's your own business. Scheduling in self-care is key in supporting yourself so you can better support your clients, employees, or customers. Book daily breaks, get meal deliveries, schedule trips to the spa, or plan weekends away with friends. Know what you need and be proactive in supporting yourself.
  3. Get comfortable with feedback and ask for it often. This is key to continuing to create a successful business. It can be uncomfortable, but growth is never easy, and there might be things you are missing that could take your business to the next level. Ask your friends, family, and patrons, and be open to change.
