Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melanie Adcock, Founder of Tech Copy Authority Enterprises LLC, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tech Copy Authority is a small business that provides technical writing services and content creation to enterprise software companies in the B2B space.

Tell us about yourself

I first became a technical writer after I was in tech sales for a decade. My custom-written letters to C-Suite Executives were getting noticed and getting results, so I decided to get out of sales and focus on writing content. It was a great move because I no longer had a stressful sales quota, and I could work from home. This evolved over time into me getting a business license, and fast forward to today, I've managed a team of 10 writers, satisfied tons of clients, and done an award-winning radio broadcast called Tech Scene Chicago.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

By far, it is making a difference in the lives of the contractors I've worked with, encouraging them, motivating them, and nurturing positive working relationships with them as a manager and mentor that I never had myself in the corporate tech world back when it was very male-dominated still. I am also proud of my diversity stats in who I choose to work with.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me as a female business owner and entrepreneur was saying goodbye to personal relationships with people who didn't believe in me or just thought they could take over what I was doing. You have to stand your ground and not let anyone steamroll over you. Once I made those tough decisions to make people like that exit my life, my success rate skyrocketed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, there are tons of wealthy people out there who are no better than you who just so happened to get a business license and go with it and embrace the uncertainty. So there is no reason why it can't be you.

Second, a friend of mine told me once if you want to get the get, you've got to do the do. I've found this simple saying to be true through the years.

Third, your best time to start a business may have been ten years ago, but the second best time is right now. Go for it!
