Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in public relations but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meg Androsiglio, Founder and President of Meg Androsiglio PR, located in Skaneateles, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Meg Androsiglio PR was created to make public relations accessible and fun for female founders. We are here to give power to small business leaders - teaching them the tools to claim the headlines and spread their message. We've worked with founders and companies in the beauty, lifestyle, nutrition, and fashion spaces, but our simple methods can be applied to almost any business for recognition and visibility.
Tell us about yourself
For 14 years, I helped Fortune 500 companies share their mission with the world as a senior leader at top national PR agencies. I represented brands like Unilever, ASICS, Nike, ClassPass, and Rodan & Fields. As I climbed up the corporate ladder, I became disenchanted with what I saw at the top and was working further and further away from the founders that gave me my passion for work. In 2021, I put in my notice a week after my honeymoon and started Meg Androsiglio PR to focus on sharing my resources and knowledge with entrepreneurial women out to change the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing my clients make their dreams a reality is my ongoing accomplishment. I am such a proud teacher - my students have been featured in places like New York Magazine, Bustle, InStyle, SheKnows, and more. They've worked with Fortune 500 companies like Adobe. They've started podcasts and landed their own dream clients. This work changes lives and businesses, and I am so psyched I get to do it every day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
As a business owner, you need to wear many hats, and I think sometimes entrepreneurs discount strategies and tactics that would be amazing for their businesses because they are not comfortable with them yet. I find the key is making the struggle work for you.
I'm uncomfortable on almost a daily basis! Before my business, I did not like social media, but now I look at it as a free community tool to connect with other business owners, peers, and potential clients. I also share lots of free content through social media, serving my community.
When it comes to something like public relations, I see many entrepreneurs shy away from it - thinking they're not good enough or "don't need it" (which is an excuse). PR is simply the creation and support of relationships - relationships with media, with your audience, and with partners. Make PR what you want it to be - you don't need to go up on stage or pitch Forbes if you don't want to. What about local events, guest coaching, or starting a podcast? Have PR follow YOUR desires, not what you think you "need" to do for PR.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find an entrepreneurial community to get involved in ASAP and be an active participant. Being a business owner can be lonely. Having a like-minded group support you is a must-have.
- Give yourself grace and patience. In order to have a sustainable business, you are going to build it over time.
- Have fun and step into your CEO shoes. Dress show you want to feel. Give your office a makeover. Take a Friday off now and then. You're the boss, so live like it!
