What's your business, and who are your customers?
Mediamazing is your partner in content creation. We offer clients a variety of options on how we can help tell your message, from educational services for the DIYers to full production services in videography, photography, and podcasting.
Tell us about yourself
I have always had a passion for storytelling and education, which is why a career in content creation works so well for me. It is a field in which you can always learn more and always strive to make things better. I knew from a very young age that I would be working in the entertainment industry to some degree. I used to stay up late and sneak downstairs to watch Saturday Night Live and Conan O'Brien as a child. As I went to college and moved to New York to start my career, it became obvious to me that while I enjoyed being in front of the camera, behind the scenes was where I was meant to be.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been simply building the business into what it has become. It wasn't an instant, overnight success. It has been a slow build over 10 years of hard work and learning. I have had a lot of conversations with other entrepreneurs and time spent researching tools and techniques to figure out what works best for myself and the company as a whole. I've learned a lot over the years and have made plenty of mistakes. But the biggest thing from that is that I've learned from those mistakes and have grown because of them.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is cliche but so true: work/life balance. It is something I'm constantly working on. I tend to throw myself into the business and try to do everything all the time. Before I was able to bring in some other team members, this was a necessity. Now that we have a team in place, it is figuring out the balance between what I need to focus on and how I can have some time for myself and my family.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have patience! It's rare to hit the ground running. Be prepared to have a few down years early on and not to get frustrated, but to learn and grow.
- Build a team. As soon as you start to feel overwhelmed, look for help. That can look different depending on your business. Find your strengths and work with those, and hire people who can excel in your weaknesses.
- Have fun! Being a business owner can be super stressful at times, make sure to take time to breathe.
