What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a public relations agency that caters to business owners and their businesses. For people who don't have a budget to hire a PR agency, I also have an online course and mentoring program that teaches them how to act as their own publicist or bring PR in-house.

Tell us about yourself

I am a former TV reporter and anchor. In that role, I was pitched A LOT by business owners and publicists. Most of their pitches fell flat, so when I was looking for a more flexible schedule, I joined "the dark side" and started pitching clients to the media in the way I would've wanted to be pitched when I worked in a newsroom.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is building a team of women who enjoy what they do when they work with the Media Maven team and the Media Maven clients. Coming from corporate America, I know how tough it is to enjoy that part of the job, so it's important to me that my team loves their job and the people they're surrounded by.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is letting someone go. Having those hard conversations is not something I've been great at, but I like to think I'm getting better.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three tips are:

  1. Invest in a coach or a mastermind with people who are smarter than you.
  2. Read lots of business and personal development books.
  3. Don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. Be quick with your decision-making.
