Real high-quality foods to your doorstep - Meat N' Bone
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Luis Mata, founder of Meat N' Bone, located in Coral Gables, FL.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a purveyor to the common man. At Meat N' Bone we have brought real high-quality foods to your doorstep. Our customers now have access to the kind of stuff only high-end chefs could source. Moreover, our model is educational, meaning we help our consumers make the right choice by providing them with tons of information. We have three boutiques (Miami, Pinecrest, and Coral Springs / Parkland) and deliver everywhere in South Florida, we also ship nationally. We are a family-owned business obsessed with doing things the right way.
Tell us about yourself
I am originally from Venezuela, moved to the US about 21 years ago. My background is in corporate finance where I worked for companies such as Ryder, UPS, and Chanel but I found a passion for education after I joined Laureate Education a few years ago. Everything I learned in these businesses I applied to Meat N' Bone. I am motivated by building a business that can support my family and that of my business partners and employees. I am motivated by offering truly unique products at amazing prices. As for what got me to start this business? The lack of quality proteins in South Florida.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I would say the fact that we have bootstrapped this business with no capital. Everything we have today we built over the last 4 years... we started with less than $5,000. We coded our own website, took our own pictures, and even built our boutique.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
You have to sacrifice a lot and a lot of people do not understand why it is you never have time or your vacations happen during the "low season". But I love what I do, so to be frank... I have never had so much fun while working.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Work hard, if you do not know how to do something.. figure it out. Last but not least, NOBODY is going to work harder than you do. Lead by example, you should and must be willing to do every single job in the company.
Anything else you'd like to share?
How thankful I am for the support of my family, friends, and customers. They motivate me every day.
