Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Isa Kujawski, Founder, and CEO of Mea Nutrition, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mea Nutrition is a functional nutrition and holistic health consulting company that aims to help professionals use food as medicine to improve mood, focus, and energy after decades of stress. Using a proprietary 3-part framework of the mind-body connection, medicinal nutrition, and detoxification, Mea Nutrition provides an all-inclusive service to individuals who are ready to take a leap into up-leveled health and vibrance. Mea Nutrition also incorporates functional lab testing for a truly customized root-cause approach to healing.

Tell us about yourself

I founded Mea Nutrition after making a career transition from a 10-year active duty tenure in the U.S. Navy. My passion for health, wellness, and mental well-being was shaped by my lived past as a veteran struggling with periods of depression and anxiety, my observations of fellow service members struggling with chronic stress, and the unfortunate experience of losing my brother to suicide. Each day, I am motivated to spread the message about the intersection of nutrition, lifestyle, and mental health while being a living example of what I preach.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been expanding my mindset and believing that I can succeed as an entrepreneur. I grew up with limiting beliefs about money and my own potential, so growing into the business owner I am today was not something I could have fathomed even a few short years ago.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is maintaining inner peace despite periods of unpredictability. Unlike a 9-5 salaried job, there is no guarantee of income, which may invoke feelings of anxiety. During these times, I've learned that it's best to embrace the unknown as a vacuum of limitless potential rather than a burden that robs you of your passion and creativity.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear on your ideal endpoint in business. Is it a certain level of cash flow? Is it freedom and flexibility in your lifestyle? Is it to eventually sell the company? Getting a clear vision in place will allow you to build a roadmap to achieve your aim versus throwing spaghetti at the wall.
  2. Consider investing in mentorship or courses created by individuals who have legitimate experience in getting to where you want to go and have systems and processes in place such that the business can run without them.
  3. Limit external distractions that rob you of your own creativity and authenticity. Don't follow a bunch of competitors or try to copy what others are doing. This will water down your message and confuse your unique mission.
