What's your business, and who are your customers?

I've had a freelance invention & design company, Me First! Designs, Inc. for 20 years. Over the course of my business, I've designed 1000's toys, accessories, small furnishings, apparel, gear, tabletop, packaging, advent calenders & so much more. I create for humans & pets!

Tell us about yourself

I live and breathe design. I am inspired by nature, my children, and pop culture. Always taking photos of inspiration, my mind won't stop creating. I am a problem solver, and I am always looking at ways to make life better for parents.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Currently, I work full-time at a pet company & freelance. I am successfully raising three amazing children. My biggest accomplishment is knowing that my children have always watched me work hard, and in turn, I see how they are out-the-box thinkers & doers.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a business owner is juggling work/play. When I travel for vacation, I leave my laptop at home. Yes, I still check my email and take photos of inspiration, but I aim to enjoy my time with my family and focus on relaxing. I have to admit, though, that I am still an early riser, even on vacation (6 am), and can't sit still.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Wake up early to get things done.
  2. Go to bed early and walk away from that stressful project. In the am, it might not look as bad as you think.
  3. Walk away from negativity. If your client is stressing you out, finish the project and say goodbye. I've done that and never looked back.
