Promote Healthy Lifestyle Change - MDA Wellness

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marissa Alert, Founder of MDA Wellness, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At MDA Wellness, we help law firms reduce turnover and increase productivity by providing their attorneys and business professionals with practical and actionable strategies to deal with stress and prevent burnout. We deliver these research-based strategies through workshops, training, office hours, and consultation.

Tell us about yourself

I started MDA Wellness to meet the growing need for resources to address the mental health challenges employees are facing in their workplaces. I know the toll chronic stress and worry can take on people's performance and their ability to show up as their best selves.

What drives me is this desire to see people live fulfilling and meaningful lives, ones where they have the skills they need to identify and eliminate the barriers getting in their way or keeping them stuck.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hmm, I'd have to say getting my first client. That was such a huge moment for me because it was the culmination of so many months of hard work. When you start out, you believe so strongly in what you have to offer, and sometimes doubt can creep in, allowing you to wonder if anyone will ever find value in what you're providing. When I landed that first client, it was reassuring and motivated me to keep going.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are so many things that make being a business owner hard at times. If I had to choose one right now, it would be juggling multiple roles. Sometimes it's also hard to figure out what to prioritize. This is usually an indication that I need to go back and clarify my goals and the action steps to achieve them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find mentors to support you and challenge you to think critically, especially when problem-solving.
  2. Embrace the ups and downs but don't let the downs keep you down or make you quit.
  3. Make taking care of your physical and mental health a priority. It can be easy to put your health on the back burner, but your business may suffer in one way or another if you're not functioning optimally.
