Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle and David Sarraf, owners of McCalls Meat and Fish Co., located in Los Angeles, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

McCall's Meat and Fish Co. opened in January 2010. Our goal was and still is to create a gourmet neighborhood market featuring the highest quality meats, fish, produce, pastries, and retail accompaniments. We offer a selection of specialty cheeses along with handpicked items to stock your pantry. We strive to bring you the best quality products needed to create any meal, from simple to fine dining, in the comfort of your home.

Tell us about yourself

My wife and I always talked about owning a cafe, or a food specialty store where we could make a little difference in peoples day to day lives through food. . . what better way to do that than McCalls. Bringing people together and creating an exceptional shopping experience is our daily motivation. It's our passion, it's challenging and what we love to do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Working 8 hours a day, seeing the same people and doing the same work is not easy. As an owner,  we have always tried to create an environment for our staff where they feel encouraged, challenged, and free to communicate new ideas. Having employees that feel better every day makes for a better business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing time and people! As an owner, we are pulled in many directions daily. Managing how to deal with issues that come up in the moment while at the same time, trying to complete daily responsibilities is truly challenging. Managing people is also a very difficult piece. Personalities and opinions are always conflicting in the work place.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1) Love what you do.

2) Get the right people in the right places. Delegate.

3) Respect your customers and staff.
