Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fashion but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcia Davis, Owner of MB's Boutique and Things, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My husband and I started MB's Boutique and Things back in 2017, and we are a women's retail clothing business, but our specialty is plus-size clothing for women. We don't have a brick-and-mortar location; we set up various pop-up craft shows in the Las Vegas area. Our customers are women looking to make an enhancing change to their wardrobes. They are looking for exciting colors, etc.

Tell us about yourself

As a former flight attendant and manager at Nordstrom, I have always been great at identifying key trends in fashion and assessing the needs/wants of customers. I also noticed how many retail outlets did not have exciting clothing options for plus-size shoppers. My personal motivation comes from my shopping experiences over the years after giving birth to our children. I noticed right away that options for beautiful and exciting clothing were limited for plus-size clothing. My mission is to make a positive difference for my customers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been establishing a solid, returning customer base and hearing their stories about how satisfied they were with a purchase. I also love hearing about the compliments they received while wearing my merchandise.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things is finding the right balance between being a business owner and being available for my family. In addition, it was initially a challenge to effectively convey my vision for the business to my family. I would also add that it was a challenge to convince my plus-size customers that it is okay to step out of the traditional mode of basic colors and wear more trendy outfits. Lastly, convincing my customers that they are beautiful and my clothes only enhance what they have.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  • First and foremost, have a vision.
  • Attend more no-cost retail trade shows.
  • Have fun, and try to be gracious.
  • Remember, when things aren't going well, it is okay not to be okay.
