Developing Each Student's CELLO SOUL - Matthew G Cello Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Goulet, Founder of Matthew G Cello Studio, located in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a cello teacher and founder of my own cello studio, using the Suzuki method as a fundamental pedagogical platform. I teach all ages of students, from 3 years old to 75 years old. Included in my annual tuition program, I offer private and group lessons, cello technique, theory, reading, ear training, and history, as well as providing opportunities for public performances during the year.

Tell us about yourself

Steve Jobs said that you could not connect the dots going forward only when you look back. Looking back now, although my business is still very new, I see how my vocation is the right combination of my deepest passion and my most viable qualities that I can offer as a person. My passion is music and education, and my personal qualities are my ability to form relationships with a variety of personalities and to inspire enthusiasm as a leader. Also, I am detail oriented and organized. I look forward to working each day because I feel that it is aligned with my deepest sense of purpose and because I am contributing something unique and valuable to other people.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Offering a service that cannot be found anywhere else. I am offering myself as entirely as possible in forming a connection with my students; also, it is necessary to be very open to create art. I insert humour and personal insights into my lessons. In addition, I feel that the small contributions I make each week with props and customized exercises (to help students learn tricky techniques) are each small victories.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Insecurity/uncertainty. Clarity and stability only come with trial and error.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Follow your strongest impulse. Do what makes you come alive. "You need a garden to water." You need to really care about what you have chosen to do; otherwise, you won't take care of all the little details to ensure continual growth. Doing what you love, for me, is important because it will help you to place value at the top, and that is what you want to offer to your clients.
