Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matilda Lindell, Founder of Matilda Lindell Voice Studio, located in Stockholm, Sweden.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help professional and aspiring singers discover their vocal superpowers and voice teachers to RE-discover their own! I have become mostly focused on a certain voice technique called "belting." But to do that, you need it all, so that's what I give my clients. I teach mostly online, and I love how that connects me with singers around the world!

Tell us about yourself

I have always been fascinated by the voice and never stopped studying and learning more about it. I am a touring singer, so experimenting on stage has been a valuable part of my journey. It has become a passion of mine to share what I have discovered with other singers and teachers so they can feel more confident about their voices. The voice is such a big part of who we are, singer or not, and the exploration of the voice never ends, which makes it very exciting. To be a part of someone's voice journey, so to speak, feels big.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I started believing in myself more, as I encouraged my clients to do, I built my business steadily in the way I wanted. So that must be my biggest accomplishment since I now can serve many more singers and continue doing what I love. When people reach out to me about teaching belting (or other voice techniques), it feels like I'm putting a small mark on this map!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

For me, as a solopreneur, it is easy to never stop working, so trying to find a good balance can be a challenge. But that's also the best thing about being your own boss - you decide when to work :) I'm just in the first few years of bringing my business online, creating courses and content so there are many parts to learn and paths to test out before you know what works for you and your clients. But that is also exciting - to test new things and create the business of my dreams!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

At the beginning of starting my business, I had to work on the mindset that I have something to offer and people can choose to take it or leave it. I don't need to apologize for putting out the content into this world - it's a service, an opportunity to learn from me! So my tips are:

  1. Believe in yourself and what you can bring to the table without thinking about what anyone would think about it. Your people will find you! Test things, and don't be afraid of failure because you will fail, and then get better and better at honing in on the best way to build your business.
  2. Plan your time. I have so many moving parts being a one-woman show for now, and I can get lost in all the tasks and then become overwhelmed. Just plan, make a schedule, and do the task.
  3. Learn! Take courses, and find mentors! I've invested in lots of knowledge around my area of expertise, of course, marketing, ads, copywriting, etc. It has given me more confidence in what I'm doing, and in the long run, I'm saving money. Cause that can certainly be an issue for a small business like mine, I need to consider my budget. When taking these courses, I have also found amazing communities of like-minded business owners, and it's been a great support!
