Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maryam Collahi, Founder of Maryam Collahi Medspa, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a medical spa located in the heart of Yaletown Vancouver called Maryam Collahi Medspa. Our clients vary from teenagers to women in their late 90s!
Tell us about yourself
I have had a passion for beauty since I was a teenager. Makeup artistry was my foot in the beauty industry. I eventually moved to Canada in 1996 and decided to follow my passion further into the industry. I then opened up my own salon in 2003.
What motivates me to do what I do each day is, coming into work and not knowing who I’ll meet. I’m constantly in awe of the many amazing people I have the chance to connect with from all walks of life, with incredible stories to learn. During the many years of providing superb service, I’ve gotten to know my clients over the years, which created a loyal relationship that has really been key to the success of my business. To add, working alongside my beautiful team and seeing how my business has allowed them to grow is absolutely special to witness.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The rebranding and expansion of my business to a medical spa in 2020 and having the best team I could ever ask for to this day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Having my own business comes with all the responsibilities. I’m not only responsible for myself but also for everyone that works with me. It can be hard because I do my best to help others be successful while trying to deliver my own professional goals. Due to certain circumstances that are out of my control, such as the COVID pandemic, it can make you feel helpless as a business owner.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Hard work, determination, discipline. Growing a business is like riding a bicycle that you have to peddle constantly. As soon as you stop, you fall.
