Balance Life, Business, Fitness & Nutrition - Mary Massey
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary Massey, founder of Mary Massey Coaching, located in Boonton, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I serve female Entrepreneurs to position their product or service more strategically online by leveraging social media to build their email list, look more confident on video as the expert in their field, and foster community while avoiding stress and overwhelm. My clients say that I take them from feeling stressed and overwhelmed and not knowing where to start to finding clarity, improving their mindset, and having a solid plan of action for balancing their life and business.
Many times we dream of having our business without understanding what that entails. Developing a strong mindset is crucial and so are healthy habits. We overwork ourselves and forget about our self-care. Yes, the business is important, but burnout is very real. If you combine this with also being the pillar of the household, you can easily find yourself overwhelmed, unmotivated and unhealthy.
In order to avoid this, I teach my clients how to find balance by prioritizing self-care and setting the right goals for their business. I encourage the use of social media and email lists to position yourself as the go-to, trusted provider for what they need.
Tell us about yourself
My desire for entrepreneurship was inherited from my dad. He was an immigrant who had many dreams but often failed, and even though he would fail at his business plans, he never stopped trying. Through the years, I have also tried different ways of working for myself and see all my setbacks as a setup for achieving more. I may not be financially rich, but I'm grateful for the opportunity to reach more women who need that extra push so that they see that they can also follow their dreams and feel fulfilled no matter how tough life might treat them.
I am definitely driven by the desire to experience those "a-ha" moments and breakthroughs from my clients and by having my kids see their mom enjoying what she does.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have been asked several times to speak, mentor, and coach, but my biggest accomplishment is being seen as someone who has a calm demeanor and is so zen no matter what happens. I inspire that in others as well. Life is already full of negativity, stress, anxiety, and so much more that doesn't serve us. But when you can be calm in the midst of a storm, you know that you're OK no matter what.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The stress and overwhelm that come with being a business owner can affect our health if we are not careful. When we add parenting to the mix, there's a huge amount of guilt that also takes over. This is why it's crucial to lean on someone who can be honest and knows what it's like to walk the path.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The first step is to understand why you want to be in business for yourself and who you want to serve. Having this clarity can lead to setting up a plan of action. Know where you want to be and work backward. Who do you need to talk to? What type of people do you need in your corner? What skills do you need to develop?
Secondly, prioritize self-care, which looks different for everyone. I love fitness and spending time alone. Others enjoy time with friends while others might be happy reading a book.
Third, hire a coach. Having a coach is the best shortcut to success that you can have, and the right one will guide you in a way that works for you and your specific goals while taking a holistic approach. It's not just about the business but about what you want out of life.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
When you're aligned with your purpose, the work that you do will always be fulfilling, but there will always be days when things don't go as planned. There is loss, illness, lack of clients or customers, and the list goes on. Work on your mindset, find clarity and learn from the experience of others. Never be afraid to ask for help.
