Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martina Ramirez, Owner of Martina Elena Web Design, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We build websites and design applications for clients, both big and small. Over half of our clients are non-profit organizations. We work with clients nationwide, although many are located here in Kansas City. We are the web team for many organizations and pair well with web designers, marketing and advertising directors, owners, and boards.

Tell us about yourself

I wanted flexibility and a say in the projects I worked on. My background is agency based. When I first started my career, I worked at agencies with 100-400 employees. As a female minority in tech in the early 2000s, it was difficult to get ahead. At the end of the day, I'm building solid, honest relationships with my clients. I get to know them and help with their business via the web. I believe this is a win for my business as well as theirs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finding my niche was the key. Working with non-profits is huge for me! I'm happy to be able to make a difference in a variety of organizations. Being successful in helping clients exceed expectations while working within budgets and growing outstanding relationships along the way.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Keeping positive about failures. We must fail to grow, learn and succeed. It's easy to give up after failing. The hardest thing is to keep moving forward after what feels like a failure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get an accountant and a business account.
  2. Get your legal docs in order.
  3. Join local networking groups both in your field and outside your field. Whether it's a local chamber or entrepreneur meetup. Get out there and network!
