Freeing Ideas - Martha Warner
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Martha Warner, CEO and Owner of Martha Warner, LLC., located in Edmonton, KY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Martha Warner, LLC. We're digital marketing and project management specialists. Our clients are busy business owners who need websites, social media, and email newsletters to increase sales or those who have ideas that they just can't seem to figure out how to make happen.
Tell us about yourself
I come from pretty humble beginnings. I was the first in my family to go to college, and there was a lot of judgment that came with those decisions. I had four kids throughout college and spent about 12 years as a single mom before meeting my husband.
I was (and still am) a teacher, and I was working as Assistant Director at a community center. But I wanted more flexibility in my schedule to be there for my growing kids and aging parents. I cashed out all of my retirement accounts and started my business. It was scary. Most of my business was from referrals, which worked well because my community ties run deep.
When the pandemic hit, I was busier than ever. My husband and I bought our dream farm and had long-term plans to fix it up and then move until he got sick. We realized that our dream wouldn't happen until we made it happen. So we sold our house and moved to our farm, which we were able to do because of my remote work.
Each day, I get to take on new challenges for my clients while I'm in my beautiful office next to our creek. And I have the flexibility to go back to my hometown when I'm needed.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is seeing my client's successes. I love when my clients have wins. I also love hiring people to be on my team!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is giving up control. I have a wonderful team that I trust implicitly, but it took me a while to get to that place.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Set up boundaries with your clients, friends, and family early. Not everyone will respect what you're building.
- Realize that you're not right for everyone, and everyone is not right for you. Being told no and saying no are okay.
- Be ready to put in what you want out of your business. You want success—work for it.
