Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Glassett, founder of Market Juice, located in Anchorage, AK, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Market Juice is a cold-pressed juice, smoothie, and coffee bar in Anchorage, AK keeping us healthy in the frigid North! Anchorage is a city that loves to support locals, so our customers are a wonderful mix of health freaks, mindful eaters, change seekers, and people living their best lives one smoothie at a time.
Tell us about yourself
I worked many years in project management at a local hospital. I was teased about bringing my smoothie every morning to work and for never ordering out lunch with my team. I decided instead of having to travel outside of Alaska to have access to cold-pressed juice; I would change my whole life and create a welcoming environment with a great product that everyone could access here.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Market Juice opened in July 2017, and I had my daughter in August just a few weeks later. I then had my son in 2019. I am super proud of being a mom of 2 while running a successful business at the same time. It is/was not always easy, but knowing the building is a part of their story made me very happy.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Despite the one million lessons learned, people can be the hardest thing. Building a great team, losing great people to other (most often) wonderful opportunities, navigating personal empathy and a business mindset is all challenging. People are also one of the best things to have. A dedicated team to what we do here is awesome to witness.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- It is okay to start before you are ready.
- Be smart about money. Know how it is spent from day one. Even be your own bookkeeper if you can!
- Spend time with people. You don't have to be the face of your business necessarily, but let people know who you are, meet your customers, hear their stories, and share your own.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Visit Alaska! It's the best, and come by Market Juice while you are here. We look forward to meeting everyone.
