Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Anderson, Founder of Anderson Music School, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We teach private music lessons in piano and guitar to students of all ages and skill levels.
Tell us about yourself
We have always wanted and worked towards a career in music, as music has been a huge part of both our lives since an early age. We feel incredibly fortunate to be able to pass on our knowledge and passion for guitar and piano to our students.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To see our students, whether young or old, progress on their instrument and to see how it becomes more and more meaningful to them. And that we have seen so, so many students do so in the last 20 amazing years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Hardest thing? I'd say the first few years as you are trying to get your business up and running. Developing (for us at least) word of mouth was huge but took a while. Now, most of our students can be traced back to someone who told someone who told someone else, etc.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Believe that what you do/offer has worth and that you are good at it!
- Have faith that a slow year will be followed by a better year!
- Be thankful - being self-employed and being your own boss is incredibly rewarding!
