Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mario Martín, Owner of Mario Patterns, located in Madrid, Spain.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach occasional artists how to draw easy geometric patterns with step-by-step tutorials as a way to relax and practice self-care.

Tell us about yourself

I've always loved art. I learned all I know about drawing and composition in Architecture School and a Master's in Graphic Design. However, I had to explore on my own to find my true passion: pattern art. There's something about drawing repetitive elements that were so relaxing and helped me alleviate my own anxiety. I knew I wanted to help others unwind from their stressful routines the same way, so I started creating content on social media teaching them how to draw geometric patterns.

People responded in a very positive way, so in a matter of months, I created an online shop, a membership program, and a website to sell my drawing guides, and that's how Mario Patterns started out. Showing others how therapeutic traditional art can be in an increasingly digital world is what motivates me the most.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating my first coloring book, called "The Mindfulness Patterns Coloring Book," with The Experiment. Working on such a big project with an established publishing company meant a lot for a small independent artist like me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We live in a fast-paced world that's constantly changing: new social networks, ways to consume content, marketing techniques… What's working one day, the next it doesn't. Being able to adapt to all those changes is the biggest challenge for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, I think money shouldn't be your main motivation when starting a business. Find something you're truly passionate about, even if it won't make you crazy rich super fast.

Second, don't try to appeal to everyone. Niching down is scary, but a very targeted community is enough to keep your business running.

Finally, remember your mental health is more important than your business. Taking breaks when you're feeling burnt out is necessary, so your business is sustainable in time.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Go to a therapist! Starting a business is always uncertain and mentally draining. Having a professional to keep things on track and making sure you don't spiral down has been super helpful.
