Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mardi Winder-Adams, owner of Positive Communication Systems, LLC., located in Naples, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the go-to divorce coach for high-achieving women. My coaching program focuses on guiding women with a step-by-step, confidential, and individual process that reduces the emotional and financial costs of divorce. Having clarity in what you want and need for your future and the future of your children helps you make the right decisions to bring that vision of your life after the divorce into reality.

In working with hundreds of women through this process, I know that having a professional, certified coach creates a sounding board to try out ideas, build skills, and prepare for difficult conversations, negotiations, and mediation. Too often, the focus is just on getting through the divorce, which can lead to decision-making processes that are not beneficial or helpful moving forward.

Tell us about yourself

I am an executive and leadership coach and a certified mediator. In both of these roles, I encounter women who are frustrated with their divorce, not being heard through the process, and not knowing how to take control of their lives during this transition. Seeing women make the change from passively experiencing the divorce to understanding they have control of the process and their future is what motivates me every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Moving from an executive and leadership coach to a divorce transition coach meant a lot of rebranding and education to the public. My biggest accomplishment and one I continue to work on is becoming recognized as an essential part of the divorce professionals for the clients I serve.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing time and technology. It seems like there is always one more thing that needs to be done today and cannot wait. Technology is one of those "must-do" things that seem ongoing and require a steep learning curve.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find people you see as top professionals in the field and get to know them in person or on social media.
  2. Take advantage of opportunities and get out of your comfort zone. Growth never happens in your comfort zone!
  3. Give first before asking something from someone else. Try to bring value to each networking event or conversation with a potential customer, client, or referral source.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting a business is one of the best things I have ever done. It is not always easy, but you have the ability to chart your own course and create a business model that is uniquely your own.
