Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcus Schaller, a marketing strategist and copywriter based in Westerville, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a marketing strategist and copywriter specializing in helping B2B companies create clear, compelling, and obsessively customer-focused messaging. I’ve also recently launched The WorkSelfLife Podcast to help entrepreneurs realize their full potential, build the unique business they were born to create, and free themselves from the internal obstacles, fears, and conflicts that block them from creating at their highest level.

Tell us about yourself

My entrepreneurial and consulting career began in the late 90s, starting my first business (fitness training) while building a portfolio of multi-family commercial properties. In 2003, I shifted my focus to marketing, first as a business development coach for entrepreneurs and later as a consultant and copywriter for larger B2B brands.

I love solving complex marketing challenges and helping my clients design their marketing messaging—their specific value props, selling points, hooks, and benefits—around the sweet spot between their company’s unique strengths and the needs of their ideal customers. I’ve also dedicated much of my focus to helping other entrepreneurs build a business that expresses their unique talents, interests, and purpose.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Building a business that allows me to work on the types of projects that fit my strengths and creative interests.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

It’s hard to stay focused on what matters and concentrate on the activities that have the greatest impact, but it’s a critical skill if you’re going to succeed without burning yourself out. So many business owners spread themselves too thin by trying to do everything at once or trying to build a “generalist” business that solves a wide range of problems for every type of customer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Embrace your strengths: Identify your authentic talents, interests, and purpose so that you can do the work you love for customers who truly appreciate your unique approach.
  2. Craft a compelling brand story: Set yourself apart from the competition by focusing your marketing messaging on the sweet spot between your strengths and the needs of your ideal customers.
  3. Maximize your impact: Focus your time, energy, and attention on what really matters so you can accomplish more without burning out.
