Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marcella Marino, founder, and CEO of MarRosa's Old World Cuisine, located in Newtown Square, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MarRosa's is an Italian specialty food line. We have four sauces, all made with Italian tomatoes, longer cook times to make them less acidic, and no added sugar. Our sauces are marinara, vodka, tomato basil, and Sicilian sauce. If you get heartburn after eating sauce, try MarRosa's! Many people have said they do not get heartburn after eating our sauces! Also, with the no added sugar, they are much healthier.

Tell us about yourself

I started MarRosa's during my time at Penn State during the height of the pandemic. I was a corporate innovation and entrepreneurship major, which helped me develop all the skills needed in order to start and run a business. Since I was young, I have always wanted to own my own company in the food industry. My daily motivation is to show people that there are healthier sauces, such as MarRosa's!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a young entrepreneur is having MarRosa's in over 80 stores!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner in the food industry is getting my products into stores. It takes a lot of following up and rejection to get that "yes"!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now, don't wait.
  2. You will be rejected, but that makes you want to try harder.
  3. Take time for yourself. Work will always be there.
