Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tina Washington, founder of Manifest INC., located in Jackson, MS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Manifest Inc was established at the break of the pandemic in 2020. At the start of the year, I quit my job to move to Dallas. I had accepted a position there. The unexpected happened, and two weeks before my move, an indefinite hold was placed on the position. I was devastated and lost in a sense. I didn't have a job. People were losing their jobs. I am a mom of two children. Discouragement and worry began to creep in until God reminded me of something I had wanted to do for a long time... minister to others. I've had my share of traumatic experiences. I won't go into much detail here, but if it wasn't for journaling and creative writing, I probably would have lost my mind. Journaling was a type of praying for me. I was able to be honest, and release I at was crowding my mind. I was also able to express joyful moments. So, at a time of being overwhelmed, I created a journal for those who can become overwhelmed! -- The Worry Book.

This journal gives 90 days of scripture, quotes, and poetry, written by me to help encourage and give space to write out anxious thoughts. This journal was birth at a time when the world was dealing with so much uncertainty. I am grateful that God used me as a vessel for its existence.

What is my business? My business is to inspire others to cultivate a relationship with Christ, to build an intimate relationship with our Father, and align their lives to His Will, then manifest His promises in their life. Who are my customers? I don't have a targeted group, to be honest. The journal draws who needs it. We all go through storms and valleys and if we don't find a place or a strategy to release, depression and anxiety will overtake us.

Tell us about yourself

I am a native of Jackson, Mississippi. A mom of 2, boy 18, girl 11. I am a believer in Christ, and I love serving others in almost any capacity. Manifest Inc started on my couch. No job, bank account low, kids to feed, I asked God, "What am I going to do?"!! You can say my back was against the wall, and I couldn't turn to the right or left... I had to look within.

I am motivated by the Spirit of God, my children, and people (especially women) who have experienced some of the same life challenges as I did. I am also motivated by messages from those who have purchased a journal expressing how it has spoken into their life and what they were going through at that moment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was being able to do this on my own. My children are witnesses to me pursuing my purpose. It is my hope it encourages them not to overlook the things they enjoy doing or researching... it could very well be what God is going to use to advance His Will through them.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time. I am now working full time also. Anyone working an 8-5 and operating a business knows time is hard to manage.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask yourself, "If I wasn't getting paid for this, would I still do it?". That will determine if what you are desiring is tied to your purpose or you're just trying to find a way to make money.
  2. Pray. Keep your business covered in prayer and seek guidance from the Lord. You will have dry seasons, and those seasons can sow discouragement. God will sustain you even in those times.
  3. Maintain good character and morals. All money isn't good money. Remain honest with yourself and those you serve. The best marketing tool is 'word of mouth.' What people say about you and their perception of you is important.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Just to tell people to stand behind their brand. It is a representation of them. Don't pay attention to what others are doing or if they are offering something similar. Think about how many bread companies there are! God will make room for you!
