Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in floristry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rita James, owner of Mandala Mija, located in Encinitas, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Mandala Mija! I bring the bloom to the room with heartfelt floral creations to ignite your soul and leave a memorable impression on your soul!

Tell us about yourself

As a yoga practitioner first, I've always created rituals of devotion in all my classes which organically dripped into a new career. I created my first floral mandala for my brother's celebration of life ceremony. Shortly after that, it seemed the next indicated step naturally was to move forward with more heartfelt ceremonies and gatherings for any and all occasions. We are so inundated with sorrow as a collective. I am motivated to move and inspire people to come out of hiding and return to a simpler, meaningful time. Sitting around flowers and other humans creates a sanctuary. And, for me, that is just the beginning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment thus far is that my business was started and thrived during a time of civil unrest and through the pandemic. I had my own place in the funky little town of Leucadia. If those walls could speak...they would tell you that little slice of heaven held treasures in it, magical treasures for every person that walked through those doors. It was evident that we were all struggling collectively and looking for small meaningful beatitudes to keep our hopes alive. Flowers and conversations during this time were potent and healing for the soul.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning about my not-so-strong business acumen. I am a very heart-centered businesswoman who sometimes is ruled by emotion. I have an array of fantastic women mentors around me that have walked this path previously and guided me back to business when needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. See it.
  2. Believe it.
  3. Watch it come true.
