Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Denise Ray, Founder of Mama Ray's Kitchen, located in Reno, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Mama Ray's Kitchen is the home of fresh, delicious herb and spice blends. I created my business in honor of my mother, Diane Ray. She was an accomplished caterer, an amazing cook, and the author of our family cookbook! Mama Ray's Original Rub is a tried and true family recipe. We would make it, put it in little mason jars and give it away for Christmas gifts. Now they are available to everyone! My customers are home cooks, chefs, and restaurants, locally owned businesses, and now we are in Raley's Grocery Markets.

Tell us about yourself

It all started with my mama. After she passed, I decided it was time to make a business of this. I woke up one day and began watching videos on how to start a spice business. Within 9 weeks, I had my first product to sell. My motivation is looking at my mom's picture on my products and knowing I get to work with her every day. It is a blessing and a labor of love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When people come up to me and tell me how much they love the products and our story. I love to think about my customers having fun cooking in their kitchens with loved ones like I did with my mom.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Discipline is hard but very important. It is up to me to get up every day with a list of things to do and accomplish. Working by myself has not been easy, so I am slowly building a team around me. In the beginning, my first mentor told me something so valuable, do what you know and are good at and hire people for the rest.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask questions. Lots! I would ask, "please tell me something I would not think to ask you."
  2. Find a mentor. It is amazing how other successful business owners will take you under their wing and guide you. There are so many local business communities to join.
  3. Keep it joyful. I told myself from day one that if I start getting stressed or overwhelmed, take a breath, walk away for whatever time I need, and re-boot. It is supposed to be fun!
