Original St. Louis Butter Cake - Mama Bevs Bakery
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Gary Plassmeyer, founder and CEO of Mama Bevs Bakery LLC., located in Hales Corners, WI, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is called Mama Bev's Bakery and is solely focused on introducing the world to St. Louis Butter Cake! We are a bakery manufacturer that started two years ago out of the ashes of a failed restaurant. The butter cakes are a third-generation recipe, and Mama Bevs is named after mom. We started selling more cakes than anything else, so we closed the restaurant down and started focusing on the cakes! Since the beginning of 2021, we have been able to introduce our cakes to over 300 grocery stores and on QVC.
We are a community-focused business that builds hot meals for the less fortunate and does everything in our power to make this world a better place. Our overall mission is to be able to help people through any personal issues they may have, including addiction, depression, anxiety, etc., by giving them a place to come and be around God's people.
Tell us about yourself
The road to success is a long journey (and has just started). I am a recovered alcoholic (3 years, eight months) who God gave a second chance at life, and Mama Bevs is where I chose to focus all my energy on. With the help of my wife and kids, I am able to make this journey day by day.
Before sobriety, I battled through two failed start-ups that had potential and no true focus due to alcoholism. So many lessons have been learned on "what not to do" it has propelled us forward in truly unbelievable ways.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Not giving up. Success comes through perseverance and sheer grit.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The day-to-day stress of getting to cash flow positive and making sure the teammates' people around the brand are taken care of.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Meditation is key.
- Vet your potential partners. Just because someone has a skill set doesn't mean they are an entrepreneur.
- Don't give up.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
The world doesn't wait for anyone, and opportunities are usually created!
