Become an Empowered Parent - Mama Bear Natural Nutrition

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Najette Hammond, Owner of Mama Bear Natural Nutrition, located in Beverly Hills, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and mama bear to 4-year-old twin girls. I help new parents and pregnant mamas gain nutrition and holistic wellness knowledge so they have the confidence to ask the right questions and make educated health decisions for their children. From the best quality formula to choose if nursing is not an option, to what solids to introduce and when, to making decisions on medical interventions, Mama Bear Natural Nutrition empowers parents to ask questions, think critically, research thoroughly, educate themselves on all decisions, and become advocates for their children.

This can be done via "The Empowered Parent: Help Your Children Avoid Chronic Illness and Experience Optimal Wellness" ebook (also available on Amazon Kindle), learning modules on my website (many are in creation mode at the moment), and/or one-on-one nutrition coaching. While my target clients are children and families, I help anyone who reaches out that I feel could benefit from my knowledge and resources. I just want to help people!

Tell us about yourself

I received my Holistic Nutrition certification from the Institute of Holistic Nutrition in Toronto in 2011. In 2012, I started a nutrition business focusing on corporate wellness, where I conducted wellness presentations at various corporations in the Metro Detroit Area, as well as one-on-one nutrition coaching sessions. In 2018 I became pregnant with my twin girls and decided to quit work in the last trimester to focus on self-care and caring for my girls once they entered the world. I have been a stay-at-home mom ever since.

I was (and still am) very strict about what went into and onto my daughters' bodies and used my holistic knowledge as my guide. My husband encouraged me to document everything I was doing for them at each stage so that not only he and our family knew what to do when I wasn't around but so I could eventually share my knowledge with the world. That has translated into Mama Bear Natural Nutrition and "The Empowered Parent" ebook.

My daughters are my biggest motivation to do what I do and continue educating people. I want to be an example to them and show them that health is not a fad but a lifestyle. It becomes who we are, and the earlier we start living this way, the more likely we will be to stick with it, as well as become the invitation for others to start living this way.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Publishing a book is definitely my biggest accomplishment. I've always wanted to write, and I feel like this is the best way to get all of my ideas and knowledge into one place to share with the world. Not everyone can or wants to commit - whether financially or with their time - to doing one-on-one coaching every week or sitting through learning modules. But books can be accessed at the reader's convenience. Also, I put the book together in the midst of raising twin toddlers, so I'm extra proud of that!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Time. Without question. I'm blessed to have a village that helps with my girls, but being able to carve out consistent time on a regular basis to market, create, and get the word out is tough. My first priority is my family and always will be. So, working around that is definitely something I'm continuing to focus on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Great question and this list is something I always have to keep top of mind myself.

  1. Embrace change and become uncomfortable. This is when real growth happens. We won't get too far by doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result.
  2. Be confident in your knowledge. YOU are the expert, which is why people are requesting your assistance. It's easy to doubt ourselves, especially when it comes to helping people on their health journeys. And it's totally okay to say, "that's a really great question that I'll need to do more research on. Let me get back to you on that."
  3. Be patient with and kind to yourself. Success rarely happens overnight, and for those of us that are balancing raising our families with being entrepreneurs, it can feel like a long, long trek. It's important to remember that any tiny step forward is an accomplishment. And just like our health, being a business owner is a journey, not a destination.
