What's your business, and who are your customers?

Makeup by Remi is a boutique firm providing professional hair & makeup with a clean, natural aesthetic. We help people and brands look like the best version of themselves for photos, videos, and camera appearances. We offer our clients a diverse range of aesthetic solutions with 100% client focus.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Remi Odunsi, and I am a New York-based visual artist specializing in natural hair and makeup for photography and video production. About eight years ago, I was working as a photography assistant, and one day the hair & makeup artist didn't show up. After being tapped to step in, a light went off in my head, and I started my business providing hair & makeup for photos and videos. Mentorship and guidance from the photographer I was working with allowed me to grow and build. I am motivated each day to do what I do so that I can pay it forward and provide opportunities for others the same way opportunities were provided for me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been being able to pivot and survive the pandemic. I'm full of gratitude for the ability to keep my doors open over the past two years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think that one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is having to wear so many hats and accomplish desired outcomes in only 24 hours a day. This can be very challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Just get started - If you don't go after what you want, you will never have it.
Keep your overhead low - this can give you peace of mind and additional flexibility you may need for the future.
Build a support network - make it your business to stay tapped into the larger business community.
