Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Max Chegwyn, Founder of Make It Conscious, located in Tbilisi, Georgia.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Make It Conscious is a psycho-spiritual coaching and educational resource for freedom-minded individuals. This includes exit & recovery coaching for people leaving high-control situations, such as exploitative cults and relationships, and more broadly, those looking to gain insight into themselves and develop spiritually. I have recently started the Make It Conscious Podcast, where I examine modern culture from a psychological perspective and share techniques for spiritual growth.
Tell us about yourself
I have been an online business owner since 2014. Back then, what motivated me was to find my own freedom, break free of the corporate job, and travel whilst working online. But I’ve had an interest in spirituality for as long as I can remember and spiritual practice for 20+ years. I think that all of our personal and societal problems can be construed as spiritual challenges. It’s no exaggeration to say that spirituality is vital to the preservation of our civilization. Yet there is so much misunderstanding around what spirituality actually is, what a spiritual practice consists of, and why. When hearing the word ‘spirituality,’ many people still think of magical superstition and belief systems. My job is to help demystify some of that.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I built an online business that enabled me to travel whilst working online and have the time of my life. Although my greatest “accomplishment” was learning that true freedom starts and ends with the mind. Then again, I’m not sure I accomplished it so much as it was forced upon me. Unless you’re willing to actively work on your own mind, building a business will not make you free.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Major setbacks are inevitable. They often come out of the blue and can be terrifying to the new business owner. They might include: accounts getting suspended, shipments getting lost, and business partners stealing. The hardest part is remembering in the midst of catastrophe that these are, in the end, useful and necessary experiences for psychological growth.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know yourself as well as you possibly can, and let go of any need to be seen a certain way.
- Build a business out of being yourself without any compromises on your authenticity.
- Focus on contributing value rather than on ‘making money.’
